This class addresses both digital camera operation and basic Photoshop. On the camera side, we cover ISO settings, image resolution, histograms and white balance. On the Photoshop side, we cover file size, image cropping, brightness and contrast, color correction/manipulation, RAW file conversion, image editing/captioning/storing, layers, cloning/healing, filters, sharpening, and converting color to B&W. (Note: We use Photoshop Elements 5.) Students spend some time "in the field" to practice using digital controls, and then download their images to manipulate in Photoshop.

Howard demonstrates his favorite and most requested Photoshop & Photoshop Elements techniques, including: creating vibrant color and contrast in a few seconds; using soft and selective focus; enhancing drama with motion blur; creating reflections; solarizing for an otherworldly look; color toning to create ambiance; hand tinting; applying striking edge and border effects; and printing a contact sheet or CD index cover; and creating panoramic images. In this hands-on class, you'll apply what you've learned to your own photos, either those taken during brief class field trips or those you bring from home.
