Blackwater Wildlife Refuge, MD - Jim Clark

This class covers the same basic material as the Fair Hill class (see description above) but at a different location, with a four-day class length, and with more emphasis on photographing wildlife and coastal landscapes. Regarding schedule, location and subjects:

  • Thursday evening introductions and opening session held at local motel.
  • Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in and around the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (40 miles south of Bay Bridge on the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay). Subjects include coastal landscapes such as loblolly forests, freshwater and tidal wetlands, and a variety of wildlife including wintering waterfowl, Delmarva fox squirrel, great blue herons and bald eagles. The class also explores nearby Hooper Island, a classic coastal fishing village along the Bay.
  • The refuge's visitor center is our classroom where we discuss field techniques and other topics of interest, as well as critique student work produced during the weekend.

In the event of extended inclement weather, there may be time to critique photos taken prior to the workshop. Student may bring a maximum of 20 images, in jpeg format, sized to 96 or 72 dpi, 1024 pixels on longest side.

Cost: $525
Experience: An understanding of basic camera operation.
Equipment: Digital or film camera, with a range of lens focal lengths, and a tripod. For wildlife subjects, a 300mm focal length (or longer) is suggested, and can be rented. (Note: no film processing is available at the site.)
Optional Equipment: Laptop (strongly recommended), tele-extenders, close-up diopters and/or extension tubes for macro work; battery operated flash.

Sky Meadows Park, VA - Jim Clark

This class covers the same basic material as the Fair Hill class (see description above) but at a different location, and with emphasis on photographing wildlife, especially red-headed woodpeckers and eastern bluebirds,  as well as a variety of spring wildflowers. Regarding schedule, location and subjects:

  • Friday evening introduction and opening session held at local motel.
  • Saturday: Photographing nature and wildlife in Sky Meadows State Park.
  • Sunday: Forest landscapes & spring wildflowers at nearby Thompson Wildlife Management Area.
  • The refuge's visitor center is our classroom where we discuss field techniques and other topics of interest, as well as critique student work produced during the weekend.

Gardens of the Brandywine Valley - Jon Cox
These two one-day classes in two nationally prominant gardens of the Brandywine Valley can be taken individually or together. Day One we photograph Longwood Gardens in southeastern Pennsylvania. Day Two we move to nearby Winterthur Gardens outside of Wilmington, Delaware. Jon works on both scenic landscapes and close-up (macro) flower photography. Critiques of student work and class lecture are done at the end of the day at Jon's nearby studio in Unionville.

Location: Longwood Gardens (Day1) & Winterthur Gardens (Day2)
Cost: $230 per day (Lunch and Admission Included)

Gardens of New York - Howard Millard
This course is two one-day classes that can be taken individually or together. Day One (Saturday) we explore the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. Day Two (Sunday) we cover Central Park's Conservatory Garden and other areas of the Park as time permits. Howard guides you to some of his favorite spots and discusses and demonstrates approaches and techniques for photographing gardens, flowers and parks that will make your photos of landscapes, trees and plants more evocative and compelling. Note: Rain can add a special atmosphere to nature photos, so the class takes place rain or shine.

Location: Bronx (Day 1) and/or Central Park (Day 2)
Cost: $225 per day (Note: Participants are responsible for parking, entry fees to the NY Botanical Garden, and lunch.)
Experience: Basic understanding of camera functions.
Equipment: Any camera; for flower work, SLR is recommended.
